18 AI & SEO Tools Tested for Solo Affiliate Sites (2026)

This isn’t a spec-sheet roundup. Every tool below was signed up for with a real account, run against a real task on this site — a real keyword, a real automation, a real published article — and reviewed based on what actually happened, friction included. See our AI content pipeline guide for how these stages fit together, and the individual reviews linked below for the full firsthand writeup.

If you mainly want to know what each SEO tool shows for free and where its paywall appears, see our side-by-side paywall matrix of eight of them.

This list is 18 tools as of October 2026 and will grow as we test more. We’re not interested in padding it out with tools we haven’t used — a shorter list of things we actually tested beats a longer one padded with guesses.

Stage 1: Research and content briefs

Frase — Keyword expansion and competitor SERP structure pulls were genuinely useful, and it caught a content-format mismatch we hadn’t specified. The catch: its generated “facts” and statistics need independent verification before they go near a draft — one brief built its entire thesis around a number cherry-picked from a single competitor’s blog.

LowFruits is a keyword finder built around one idea: it analyses the top 10 for each keyword and flags pages from low-authority sites. You can try it with no card (10 starter credits), and the output broadly matched the live Google results we pulled, though we couldn’t verify its domain-authority numbers. The catch is the meter: each keyword analysed costs a credit, the monthly price shown is a yearly bill divided by 12, and the 14-day refund only covers use under 100 credits.

Stage 2: Drafting full articles

Koala AI generates complete, fluent, well-structured articles with no credit card or signup required. We tested it on a topic we already knew cold — the same subject as our Make vs n8n comparison — and the gap was telling: it avoided every specific, checkable fact we’d actually verified (real bugs, real defaults, real prices), favoring safe generalities instead. It’s also a one-article trial in practice — a single article ate 79% of the 5,000 free words — and we found no way to retrieve a generated article after navigating away without exporting it first.

Stage 3: Automation and publishing pipelines

Make and n8n solve the same problem — connecting your content pipeline to the outside world (we tested both on an identical RSS-to-email-notification task, see the Make vs n8n comparison for the full head-to-head).

Stage 4: Post-writing audit and optimization

Surfer SEO and SE Ranking both audit content against what’s already ranking, but from different angles — see our Frase vs Surfer SEO comparison for how audit tools fit against brief-stage tools in the pipeline.

Stage 5: Content authenticity check

Originality.ai answers a different question than Stage 4’s audit tools: not “does this rank,” but “does this read as AI-written.” We ran it against our own AI-assisted, firsthand-tested writing and it flagged that at 100% confidence - then correctly cleared a genuinely human-written control sample at the same confidence. The free AI detector needs no signup; the Plagiarism Checker requires an account but starts with 0 credits, so it’s not actually usable without paying.

Stage 6: Technical crawl audit

Screaming Frog is a free-forever desktop crawler (up to 500 URLs, no signup, no card) that catches things content-level checks don’t. It found two real title-length bugs on this site that our own automated content-checking script missed, because that script only checks content-collection pages, not static ones. No affiliate program exists for it, so this is a pure usefulness recommendation, not a monetized one.

Stage 7: All-in-one audit and AI visibility tracking

Semrush covered similar ground to Stage 4’s audit tools in August, on a free, no-signup tier (on September 27 we could not confirm that route still exists; see the review). Its Site Audit caught a real bug the others missed — a missing DNS record for our www subdomain — and its AI Visibility tracking cross-confirmed SE Ranking’s earlier 0% AI-citation finding. Several of its warnings need a skeptical read before acting on them (see the review for what “duplicate H1 and title” and “low word count” actually meant once checked), and its Position Tracking widget treats ranking for your own domain name as a visibility win worth screenshotting — it isn’t. See our Semrush vs SE Ranking comparison for how its free tier stacked up against SE Ranking’s trial on the same live domain.

Stage 8: Title and headline packaging

CoSchedule Headline Studio is free (no card) and gave a real, quantified before/after when we rewrote one of our own review titles: score went 64 to 71, with a specific “Generic headline” flag pointing at what to fix. The catch: the actual fix (Suggestions) and the “how does this rank” data (SEO Score) are both entirely paywalled behind Premium - the free tier tells you something’s wrong, not how to solve it. No real affiliate program exists for it either.

Stage 9: Free Core Web Vitals and agent-readiness check

Google PageSpeed Insights is free, official, and needs no signup - its Core Web Vitals numbers are fully visible, unlike Semrush’s paywalled CWV widget or the other kinds of audit detail Surfer SEO, SE Ranking, and Headline Studio each gate. It also caught a real bug: 29 review-page screenshots across every published review were rendering without width/height attributes, causing measurable layout shift. Its new experimental “Agentic Browsing” category (llms.txt validation, WebMCP checks) is a genuinely new lens none of the paid tools offer yet.

Stage 10: SERP content scoring plus AI visibility, in one tool

NEURONwriter is a cheaper Surfer SEO alternative with a real free 7-day trial (no card). Its Content Score has the same length-rewards-bulk bias as Surfer’s, but its AI Visibility tracking cross-confirmed the 0% citation finding from SE Ranking, Semrush, and our own manual check - a fourth independent data point. Its upsells are priced clearly upfront instead of hidden behind a click-to-reveal paywall, a genuinely different pattern than every other tool tested this project. See our Surfer SEO vs NEURONwriter comparison for what happened when we ran the identical article through both tools’ scoring engines.

Stage 11: heatmaps, session recordings, and Copilot-specific AI visibility

Microsoft Clarity is free forever with no card and no traffic limit, confirmed directly on Microsoft’s own FAQ - a genuinely new category for this list (behavior analytics, not another SEO/content tool). Its AI Visibility feature is real, but only tracks Microsoft Copilot, not the ChatGPT/Gemini presence the other AI-visibility tools here track - check what it’s actually measuring before assuming it duplicates them. Its AI-generated session summary also confidently misread our own dev-testing traffic as a distracted real visitor, a concrete reminder to spot-check AI-generated interpretations.

Stage 12: email capture and newsletters

beehiiv has a genuinely free Launch plan (no card, 2,500 subscribers, unlimited sends, confirmed on its own pricing page), and a real test broadcast landed in the Gmail inbox. The friction is all in onboarding: signup needs an SMS phone number, the free plan isn’t directly selectable (you go through a 14-day Max-plan trial that downgrades), and the hosted subscribe form silently hangs on “Subscribing…” for about an hour after account creation with no error - it starts working later, but a new user would reasonably think it’s broken. It also has an actual recurring affiliate program (50-60% for a full year), unlike most free tools here.

Stage 13: one-page landing sites

Carrd lets you build and publish a real one-page site with no signup at all - the editor opens straight from the homepage. The catch: the free plan locks Forms, Widgets, Embeds, and Slideshows, meaning the one feature a landing page usually exists for (an email-capture form) needs the 7-day, no-card Pro trial. Even that trial has a real gap - its upsell modal advertises Widgets and Embeds together, but the trial account’s own feature checklist has no Embeds line at all. Wiring up a native beehiiv signup form went further than expected (API key + Publication ID, no OAuth), then hit a genuine wall: beehiiv now requires Stripe Identity (government ID) verification before it will issue an API key.

Ahrefs Free is free for sites you own, never asked us for a card, and asks for view-only Search Console access as a separate, unchecked-by-default permission. It showed what Google Search Console’s Links report never did for this site: 332 linking domains, all but two flagged as spam, leaving one genuine link source (Indie Hackers, with no dofollow links). Exporting the list and tracking keywords are paywalled on the free plan. Its free Site Audit scored us 96 and found no real bug, only a false alarm from Cloudflare’s email obfuscation (one crawl, so a first look, not a full test). It has no affiliate program, so this is a pure usefulness recommendation.

What we’d tell a solo builder starting from zero

If we were rebuilding this pipeline from scratch with a $0 budget: start with n8n’s free Community Edition or Make’s free tier for automation (both work, pick based on whether you want AI-built workflows or manual control), use Frase’s free trial for your first few briefs and verify every stat yourself, treat Koala AI as a fast first-draft generator only on topics you can personally verify line by line, and treat Surfer and SE Ranking as optional stage-4 audits once you have published content worth auditing — not something you need on day one.

Frasekeyword expansion, competitor SERP structure research$39/mo (Starter, billed yearly) / $49/mo billed monthly7-day trial, no credit card required (confirmed firsthand Aug 2026; re-checked on the official pricing page Sep 27 2026, still 7-day/no card)
Make (formerly Integromat)non-technical automation, connecting CMS/publishing to AI APIs$9/moFree tier, no credit card required, 1,000 ops/mo (confirmed firsthand Aug 2026; re-checked on the official pricing page Sep 27 2026, unchanged)
n8nresearch agent pipelines, publishing automationStarter 20 EUR/mo billed annually (confirmed in EUR on two genuinely separate networks - home broadband Sep 27 and mobile data/4G Sep 30 - so not an IP/session fluke. We found no currency switcher like Screaming Frog's, so we can't say whether a USD price is available from any location; our Aug figure of "$24/mo" looks stale.)Cloud: free trial, no credit card required (confirmed firsthand Aug 2026, trial was 14 days then). Re-checked the official pricing page Sep 27 2026: still says no credit card, but the 14-day length is no longer stated on the page - needsVerification. Self-hosted Community Edition is free forever, no execution/workflow limits.
Activepiecesa third free automation option alongside Make and n8n, testing/building without burning a free-tier allowance$16/mo (Plus, billed yearly)Free forever, no credit card required (confirmed firsthand Sep 2026, official pricing page and FAQ). 100 credits/day, unlimited flows. Credits are only consumed by live/published flow runs - building and testing steps in the editor consumed 0 credits in our test. Sep 26: the in-app credit box read 1,000 credits resetting Oct 7 (not re-checked against the pricing page), and one AI Chat run took it to 0 credits / 100% used.
Surfer SEOcompetitor entity/keyword research, auditing existing content against SERP competitors$49/mo (Discovery, billed annually)No
SE Rankingkeyword research with real competitor SERP data, baseline technical site auditnot confirmed firsthand - see official pricing page (shown in JPY during our Sep 27 check, ~17,455 JPY/mo for the entry Core plan - same regional-pricing-display pattern seen on Screaming Frog and n8n, not evidence of a real price)14-day trial, no credit card required (confirmed firsthand Aug 2026; still 14-day/no-card on the pricing page Sep 27 2026). Signup form rejects Gmail-style addresses and requires a domain-based 'work email' - a personal or business Gmail address will not pass signup.
Koala AIfast full-article first drafts on topics you can independently verify$25/mo (Starter) - up from $9/mo at our Aug 15 2026 check; we don't know if that was a real price increase or an error in our original entry (unresolved, see SESSION_NOTES Sep 27)5,000 free words and 25 credits, no credit card required (confirmed firsthand Aug 2026; re-checked on the official pricing page Sep 27 2026, unchanged).
Originality.aichecking whether AI-assisted writing reads as AI-generated, quick AI-content spot checks with no signup$12.95/mo (Pro, billed annually) / $14.95/mo billed monthly - 2,000 credits/moAI Checker: 3 free scans/day, up to 2,000 words each, no account or card required (confirmed firsthand Aug 2026; re-checked on the official pricing page Sep 27 2026, unchanged). Plagiarism Checker requires a free account but scanning itself requires credits - new accounts start with 0 credits, so it is not actually usable without a paid plan.
Screaming Frog SEO Spiderfree, no-expiry technical SEO audits for small sites, catching title/meta issues static pages miss from content-only checks£199/yr for the licensed version (removes the 500 URL cap, adds crawl saving and advanced features). The pricing page defaults to EUR (shown as 245 EUR/yr on this session) based on the visitor's detected region, but has a currency switcher - GBP 199 confirmed by switching it directly, so this is not a price change.Free forever for up to 500 URLs per crawl, no signup, no email, no credit card required (confirmed firsthand Aug 2026; re-checked on the official pricing page Sep 27 2026, unchanged). Desktop app (Windows/Mac/Linux), not a web dashboard.
Semrushfree technical site audits without a card, cross-checking AI-search-visibility findings against a second tool$117.33/mo (entry tier, now called 'SEO', billed annually; $139/mo month-to-month - renamed from 'Pro' since our Aug check, same ballpark price)Aug 2026 (confirmed firsthand): free, no-signup, no-card tier covered Site Audit (up to 100 pages), AI Visibility, and limited Position Tracking. Sep 27 2026 recheck: semrush.com/siteaudit/ now offers a free '1 page' SEO Checker (its own comparison table lists 'Semrush Site Audit' as the 100-page tool), and that page's 'Try Site Audit' link goes to semrush.com/signup/...&trial=force... (an account-creation page), not to a report. We could not complete a clean logged-out re-test: one attempt hit a shared daily usage cap on the 1-page tool, another used a browser already logged into Semrush from earlier testing. So we can confirm the August entry point has changed shape; we can NOT confirm whether a genuinely free, no-signup, 100-page audit still exists elsewhere on the site - needsVerification. The 7-day trial of paid plans requires a credit card, and its money-back guarantee explicitly excludes month-to-month billing - the same refund-guarantee trap shape found in the Surfer SEO review.
CoSchedule Headline Studioa free second opinion on a title/headline you've already written, checking word count/balance before publishing$4/mo (Premium, monthly) / $29/yrBasic plan is genuinely free forever (10 credits/mo), no credit card required (confirmed firsthand Aug 2026; re-checked on the official pricing page Sep 27 2026, unchanged). Signup funnel tries to upsell into a 14-day free trial of Premium first, with a 'Checkout for $0 today' screen implying a card is needed even for the $0 charge - skippable in favor of Basic.
Google PageSpeed Insightsfree Core Web Vitals data other tools paywall, catching real layout-shift/performance bugs, checking the new experimental Agentic Browsing / llms.txt checksFreeCompletely free, official Google tool, no signup or account required for the web UI (confirmed firsthand Aug 2026). Sep 27 2026: the old developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights URL now 301-redirects to pagespeed.web.dev - same free tool, new address; worth checking our own links still point somewhere that resolves. Note: the unauthenticated public API (pagespeedonline.googleapis.com) has a default daily quota of 0 queries without a Google Cloud API key - 'no signup' only holds for the manual web tool, not programmatic access.
NEURONwritera cheaper Surfer SEO alternative with honest free-tier numbers, tracking AI-citation visibility alongside content scoring in one tool$23/mo (Bronze, monthly)Free 7-day trial, no credit card required (confirmed firsthand Sep 2026). AI Visibility monitoring capped at 2 questions during trial (Bronze plan includes 5). Content Designer (one-click full article generation) is Gold-plan-only ($69/mo), not available on Bronze/Silver.
Microsoft Clarityfree heatmaps and session recordings with no card, ever, a first look at AI-citation tracking specific to Microsoft CopilotFree forever - no paid plan exists100% free forever, no credit card required, no traffic limit (confirmed firsthand Sep 2026 on Microsoft's own official FAQ). No paid tier exists at all.

The free plan isn't directly selectable at onboarding - you take a no-card 14-day trial of the top Max plan, which then drops to Launch.
Carrda quick one-page site or landing page where you don't need email capture, testing a page idea before committing to a paid form/embed integration$19/year (Pro Standard, includes Forms/Widgets/Embeds/custom domain) - Free tier exists but can't do email-capture formsFree plan: 3 sites, core building features, no signup required to start building or even to publish (account created at publish time). Forms, Widgets, Embeds, and Slideshows are Pro-exclusive on the free plan. 7-day free Pro trial confirmed no credit card required, but the trial's own account feature list does not include Embeds despite the trial upsell modal advertising Widgets and Embeds together - confirmed firsthand Sep 2026.
Ahrefsseeing who actually links to your own site, for free, telling real backlinks from auto-generated spam on a new domainFree for verified sites; paid plans from ¥19,900/mo (Lite) on the pricing page as shown to a Japan-based visitor on Sep 20 2026 (the Ahrefs Free page also advertises a Starter plan at ¥4,460/mo)Ahrefs Free (formerly Webmaster Tools): $0 for websites whose ownership you verify, unlimited verified sites, no card asked at signup (confirmed firsthand Sep 2026). Site Explorer shows up to 1,000 backlinks/keywords at once, Site Audit gets 5,000 crawl credits/month, Web Analytics up to 1M events per project. Data export and tracked keywords need a paid plan.
